Graeme Miller, a pioneer winemaker during the re-birth of the Yarra Valley wine region, established Chateau Yarrinya at Dixon’s Creek, Yarra Valley in 1971. In 1977, Graeme was awarded with the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for Chateau Yarrinya Cabernet Sauvignon. The Jimmy Watson is the most prestigious and sought after wine award in Australia and the first time it was won by a wine from the Yarra Valley. The trophy is a memorial to Mr Jimmy Watson who established the iconic “Jimmy Watson Wine Bar” in Lygon Street Carlton.
The De Bortoli family bought the property in 1987 and Graeme Miller then set up Graeme Miller Wines, now Dixon’s Creek Estate a few hundred metres down the road on the Melba Highway.
Dixon’s Creek Estate is settled in the northeast pocket of the Yarra Valley and harbours the perfect winemaking environment-slightly warmer and drier to ripen and produce a varied range of premium quality wines. Graeme’s son, Daniel has joined his father in producing beautifully balanced wines that include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
A visit to the cellar door offers a view into a working winery as well as sweeping views over the valley from the cellar door deck. You will be greeted by Graeme’s loyal assistant, Dustin Hoffman “Dusty” a friendly German Short Haired Pointer.
